News Linc: Governor Chafee Welcomes Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny to Rhode Island

Statement

Date: Oct. 3, 2014

Fellow Rhode Islanders:

Recently, I hosted Ireland's Taoiseach Enda Kenny and other Irish officials for an afternoon visit to Rhode Island. I first met with the Taoiseach in Ireland while leading a trade mission to further develop the state's relationship and growth opportunities for businesses. As a result of my visit, Rhode Island and Ireland have been exploring business and tourism opportunities.

Since May, two Irish companies have announced plans to open in Rhode Island. The first one is Greencore, a convenience food manufacturer, which will be opening up a location at Quonset Point. Construction has begun on the company's planned 107,000-square-foot facility, which would house more than 390 employees. The new facility could also be expanded by another 40,000 square feet, positioning Greencore to employ more than 600 people at Quonset at full build out.

After the Taoiseach concluded his visit to Rhode Island, I joined the business community for a reception at the Convention Center welcoming Irish companies that traveled to Rhode Island as part of the Taoiseach's visit. During that reception, Ireland-based engineering company Horizon announced it will be opening up a location here in Rhode Island. The company's CEO Aiden Corcoran said that Rhode Island is a place he can invest in. This announcement demonstrates Rhode Island is moving in the right direction.

Our state's economy is improving and we must capitalize on the positive momentum we have gained. We need to continue to find ways to strengthen our role in global economic discussions. Companies want to do business in Rhode Island, and we have to look beyond our borders to the international community to remain competitive with our neighboring states. I am pleased to work with the members of our Congressional Delegation to realize Rhode Island's full potential in attracting new businesses to Rhode Island. Taoiseach Enda Kenny's visit to Rhode Island demonstrates our commitment. I look forward to continuing economic collaboration between Rhode Island and Ireland, and also working with other companies who may consider investing in our state.

Best wishes,

Lincoln D. Chafee
Governor
